Russia-Ukraine war: Moscow takes small Ukrainian town as Kyiv holds strong

Image
The small coastal town of Berdyansk in Ukraine's south fell to Russian forces on Sunday, the fourth day of Moscow's invasion, the town's acting mayor announced just after nightfall. Berdyansk has a small naval base and a population of about 100,000 people. It appeared to be the first populated area that has fallen under complete Russian control since the start of Moscow's invasion. "Some time ago, armed soldiers entered the executive committee building and introduced themselves as soldiers of the Russian army, they informed us that all administrative buildings were under their control," acting Mayor Oleksandr Svidlo said in a video posted to Facebook, which was translated into English by CNN . Local government officials were asked to continue working, Svidlo said, "but under the control of armed men", to which they refused. "Today Berdyansk was on the line of fire. I don't know what tomorrow will be like, but I think tonight will be very,...

Facebook cracks down on disinformation, hacked accounts in Ukraine

Image
Facebook took down dozens of fake accounts and pages spreading misinformation about the Russian-led military invasion in Ukraine, company executives said Sunday, while also taking measures to combat hacking efforts in the region. The misinformation campaign was spread by what Meta executives called a “small network” of 48 pages, accounts and groups operating in Russia and Ukraine. The fake accounts operated fictitious personas across Facebook and Instagram, as well as platforms outside of Meta, including Twitter, YouTube, and Telegram, according to Meta’s director of threat disruption David Agranovich. The operation targeted people in Ukraine and had less than 4,000 followers on Facebook and less than 500 followers on Instagram, said Meta head of security policy Nathaniel Gleicher. Meta shared information about the operation with other tech platforms, researchers and governments. Meta’s investigation is continuing, but the company found links with a network that was removed in Ap...

Russia's nuclear weapons threat raises Western fears

Image
Russia’s violent invasion of Ukraine has upped Western fears of a potential nuclear conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday ordered his country’s deterrence forces, including nuclear weapons, be put on higher alert, citing so-called threats from the West as Moscow continues to push into Ukraine. A senior United States defense official said on Sunday of Putin’s order, “It's clearly, essentially, putting in play forces that, if there's a miscalculation, could make things much, much more dangerous.” The official also told reporters the U.S. has “no reason” to doubt Putin’s new order, which they called “unnecessary” and “escalatory.” Putin flouted Moscow’s nuclear might as he launched an attack on Ukraine ob Thursday, warning in a speech that countries that interfere with Russian actions will face “consequences you have never seen.” That threat sparked concerns that an emboldened Russia may be willing to use nuclear weapons should the situation escalate. Such...

Lesson From Ukraine: Breaking Promises to Small Countries Means They’ll Never Give Up Nukes

Image
UKRAINE WAS ONCE home to thousands of nuclear weapons. The weapons were stationed there by the Soviet Union and inherited by Ukraine when, at the end of the Cold War, it became independent. It was the third-largest nuclear arsenal on Earth. During an optimistic moment in the early 1990s, Ukraine’s leadership made what today seems like a fateful decision: to disarm the country and abandon those terrifying weapons, in exchange for signed guarantees from the international community ensuring its future security. The decision to disarm was portrayed at the time as a means of ensuring Ukraine’s security through agreements with the international community — which was exerting pressure over the issue — rather than through the more economically and politically costly path of maintaining its own nuclear program. Today, with Ukraine being swarmed by heavily armed invading Russian troops bristling with weaponry and little prospect of defense from its erstwhile friends abroad, that decision ...

Russia facing ‘greater resistance’ than expected from Ukraine: US defense official

Image
Russia did not anticipate the level of resistance it is facing in its invasion of Ukraine, a senior US defense official said Friday. “There is greater resistance from the Ukrainians than the Russians expected,” the official told reporters, adding that the US still believed Russian President Vladimir Putin intended to remove the Ukrainian government “In general, the Russians have lost a little bit of their momentum,” the official said. On Thursday, a Pentagon official said there was every indication that Moscow wanted to “decapitate” Kyiv’s government and install one loyal to Putin. Providing updates on the situation in Ukraine, the official said Ukraine’s “command and control” was still intact despite Russia’s continued targeting of military targets. Uncharted reviews praise Tom Holland’s ‘charm’, critics call the film ‘lively but thinly scripted

Image
The first reviews of the Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg starrer Uncharted are in, and so far, it seems the video-game film is better than most movies in its genre, but isn’t really the next spectacle for Holland after Spider-Man: No Way Home. Based on the video game series of the same name, Uncharted (the movie) is an origin story for Drake (Holland) and Sully (Wahlberg) as they enter an Indian Jones-esque world. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described it as “Raiders of the Lost National Treasure of the Fast & Furious Caribbean.” Describing it as a “buddy movie”, the review further said that it was “a lively but thinly scripted and overlong mad-dash caper movie, propelled by actors you wish, after a while, had more interesting things to say and do.” However, IGN’s Jeffrey Vega wrote that for those experiencing the world of Uncharted for the first time, the film is “a solid adventure that benefits from Holland’s charm, no matter how straightforward the plot might be.” The Guardian’...

Image
Some sectors have the brawn of pugilists who can hit beyond their weight, not because of what they represent by themselves but because of the ways in which they influence businesses and the overall environment surrounding them. Gaming is one such sector. Through the year gone by, we have heard success stories of growth in numbers in gaming, and of foreign investments and revenue generation amid the slowdown. We have heard of how other sectors are ‘gamifying’ their ways to connect better with their internal and external stakeholders and of how gaming was furthering the vision of a Digital India in its own way, to boost economic recovery. Trump documents taken to Mar-a-Lago marked 'top secret:' report

Image
Some documents former President Trump took to his Mar-a-Lago residence were reportedly marked as “top secret,” according to a new report by  The Washington Post .  Citing two people familiar with the matter, The Post reported on Thursday that some of the documents Trump took back to his Florida club after departing the White House were clearly labeled as classified, while some were marked as “top secret” — which is the highest level of classified information. It is unclear how many classified documents were recovered by the National Archives, according to The Post. Two sources told the newspaper that some records had labels signaling that the information within was very sensitive and would only be available to few people with clearance high enough to review such details. News broke on Monday that the National Archives and Records Administration had recovered multiple boxes of White House records from Mar-a-Lago last month, which contained significant communic...

A Clear Road Map To Growth

We also bring in voices from industry who talk of how the budgetary measures will play out through the year and beyond. The government’s push for green energy and clean mobility systems opens up limitless possibilities for India. As an organisation committed to sustainability, we believe that the clean mobility initiatives and blended fuels will play a significant role in achieving decarbonisation goals and in reducing the dependence on fossil fuels. One of the biggest challenges for the EV ecosystem has been battery charging stations.
